Mowing the Lawn & Roller Skating

I have really struggled to get my workouts in lately. I am having a lot of trouble balancing work, family life, and the gym.  Tonight, I gave up my favorite Zumba class to take my daughter to her first Girl Scouts meeting.  (Zumba starts at 6:30, and GS starts at 7:00).  I'll be teaching a class on Tuesday nights at church, and I have a Wednesday night class at church.  So it looks like Thursday will be my only night for Zumba.

I'm going to have to figure out something else.

This weekend, my workouts including roller skating and mowing the lawn (but not at the same time!!)

On Saturday, both of my kids had a party at the local roller rink.  We've had a roller rink in town for a few years, but we'd never been there.  I decided to be brave on put on some skates. It was definitely not the roller rink we grew up!!  Our rink had carpet everywhere except the actual rink. This one was all concrete.  Our rink was surrounded by a carpeted half wall with a padded rail. This one was a metal pipe fence.  It hurt every time I grabbed the rail.

I never got very comfortable on skates, but I did make it all the way around the rink without stopping a couple of times.  After about an hour and a half, the inevitable happened....my skates went out from under me, and fell down---hard.  On my left elbow.  It immediately formed a big bump, but there isn't much pain or difficulty with range of motion.  I haven't had it checked out yet, but it seems to be doing better.

On Sunday, I decided to help my son mow the lawn.  He's been having a lot of asthma issues.  And I've never mowed the lawn before.  He helped me by showing me where to mow, dumping the clippings, and by keeping the cord out from under the mower.

I came to the decision that mowing the lawn is like walking on a treadmill.  You walk and walk and walk and get nowhere. You sweat a lot.  And in the end you are extremely tired!  I didn't have time for a workout, so I guess this worked well.

  3. For me, functional or fun exercise trumps going to the gym or a class any day.

Pity you can't mow the lawn on roller skates. It would sure make the time pass quicker. :)

  6. Kudos for you for mowing your lawn for the first time! It's a hard job, but somebody's got do it, right? You can even make it as a form of exercise if you've used the manual mowers rather than those with a motor. I hope you burned a lot of calories there. Stay healthy!
